The Orange County Airport has recently launched an improved flight tracking system, Volans, available through the airport’s official website: www.ocair.com/communityrelations/flighttracking/. The user-friendly 3D Java application makes it easier for the public to view flight information online at any time of day. The flight tracking data can be viewed in satellite or street map layers. Volans has an address locator which allows users to identify the location of specific addesses such as a home or office in relation to a specific flight. There is currently a demand for flight lessons around the country. As pilots are getting older there are projected pilot shortages in the future and with helicopter tourism and more law enforcement and news media choppers in the sky the demand for pilots continues. A basic pilots license costs about $11,000 and takes about 40 hours to earn. A commercial license on the other hand costs about $60,000 and requires 1,000 to 2,000 hours of flight time. The John Wayne Airport’s “Airport Arts Program” continues to present museum quality exhibits in the Thomas F. Riley Terminal with an exhibition of works by Irvine resident Dennis Carrie. Now through February 16 a collection of 16 of Carrie’s portrait and landscape paintings will be on exhibit.
